When to recycle instead of donate

Short answer: if a shop couldn't put it straight back on the shelf or rail today, it's not a donation — it's a recycle or a disposal, and taking it to a shop anyway just shifts your problem onto volunteers who then have to deal with it.

Donate if:

• It's clean, complete, and in resaleable condition.
• It meets any relevant safety marking (see our CE mark guide for toys, or check furniture fire labels).
• A shop on our directory currently lists it as accepted.

Recycle if:

• It's textile but stained, torn, or unwearable — most council textile banks and some shops still take these for recycling rather than resale, even though they can't sell them.
• It's electrical but broken beyond simple repair — take it to a WEEE recycling point (most large supermarkets and household waste centres have one).
• It's a mattress, duvet, or pillow — almost never accepted by charity shops for hygiene reasons; specialist recyclers or council bulky waste collection are the right route.

Dispose responsibly if:

• Your council's bulky waste service: search "[your council name] bulky waste collection" — most offer free or subsidised collection for large items.
• Reuse networks: Freegle and Freecycle let you give away items that aren't shop-quality but are still usable.
• TerraCycle: runs free recycling programmes for hard-to-recycle items like crisp packets, beauty empties, and pet food packaging — check their website for your nearest drop-off.
