Charity shops can only accept items they can resell to fund their cause. Here is what that means for each category.
Clean, no stains, holes, or excessive wear. No names on labels — common on school uniforms and care home clothing. Cut labels out carefully with a seam ripper or small scissors. Charity shops cannot sell named clothing. Check every pocket for keys, cards, cash and tissues before you bag it up.
Clean, pairs tied together. Soles should not be worn through. Polish if possible. No broken heels or detached soles.
No mould, heavy annotation, or missing covers. Pages intact. Hardbacks in good condition sell better than paperbacks with cracked spines.
Clean, complete, with plug and cable intact. Must be PAT-testable. Include all parts and the manual if you have it. No cracked casings or exposed wiring.
No stains, tears, or structural damage. Upholstered items must have a fire safety label (BS5852) — without it, most shops cannot legally sell it. Wipe down surfaces.
Must have CE or UKCA safety marking. Complete sets only — no broken parts, no missing pieces. Clean and sanitised. Soft toys should be washable.
Clean, no stains or tears. Duvets and pillows are often not accepted due to hygiene regulations — always check the shop's page first.
Clean, intact, functional. No chipped china, cracked glass, or tarnished silverplate unless clearly vintage/collectible. Include all parts (e.g. lids for pots).
Worn underwear generally cannot be resold for hygiene reasons — new/unworn with tags is fine. Swimwear needs an intact hygiene strip. Nightwear (pyjamas, dressing gowns) needs a flammability warning label, or it cannot legally be resold regardless of condition.
