What can't charity shops accept? A full UK list

Short answer: anything where used condition can't be safely verified — car seats, helmets, cots, mattresses — plus anything missing required safety marking, like unmarked toys or unlabelled upholstered furniture.

Safety-critical items (almost never accepted)

• Car seats and booster seats — crash history and current compliance can't be verified, even if the seat looks unused.
• Cots, cribs and moses baskets — strict safety standards (BS EN 716, BS 8509) mean most shops won't risk it. Mattresses for these are refused for hygiene reasons too.
• Bike helmets and riding hats — protective integrity can't be checked once used, so shops won't resell them.
• Life jackets and buoyancy aids — same reasoning as helmets.

Usually refused, sometimes accepted

• Prams and pushchairs — some shops take these if clean, complete, and with working brakes; others refuse outright. Always call ahead.
• Mattresses — hygiene regulations and fire-label requirements mean most shops can't take these; council bulky waste collection or a specialist mattress recycler is the better route.

Missing required markings

Hygiene and wellbeing items (refused regardless of condition)

• Prescription glasses and hearing aids — refused by most major charity retailers even when in perfect condition, since fit and function can't be verified for a new user.
• Medication of any kind, including vitamins and supplements — return these to a pharmacy instead, never a charity shop.
• Nappies and incontinence products, even sealed and unused — a genuinely common donation that a general charity shop simply isn't set up to sell. Specialist schemes like The Pad Project UK exist specifically for this.
• Walking sticks, frames and other mobility aids — treated the same as other medical equipment and generally not accepted, regardless of condition.

What to do instead
