Donating furniture: fire labels, condition, and where the rest goes

Short answer: no stains, tears or structural damage, and any upholstered item needs a visible fire safety label (BS 5852) or a shop legally cannot sell it — no exceptions for condition.

The fire label is non-negotiable

Look for a label sewn into a seam, usually under a cushion or on the underside of the piece, stating it meets fire safety regulations. Without it, this isn't a shop being cautious — it's illegal for them to resell it. This catches out a lot of donors with older or handmade upholstered furniture that predates the label being sewn in.

No label, or too damaged to sell?

• Try selling privately or giving away via Freecycle or Facebook Marketplace — private sales and gifts aren't subject to the same resale restriction as a shop.
• Council bulky waste collection is often free or low-cost for larger pieces — search "[your council] bulky waste collection."
• Some councils run reuse services that collect furniture and redistribute it directly to people who need it, bypassing the shop-resale requirement entirely.
