Donating bric-a-brac and homeware: what actually sells

Short answer: clean, complete, and undamaged. A chip or crack in glass or ceramic isn't just a cosmetic issue — it's usually a straight refusal, since a chipped item can't be safely resold.

What sells well

• Ornaments, vases and decorative glassware in undamaged condition — chips, cracks and hairline fractures are usually an automatic no, for safety as much as appearance.
• Complete sets — a full dinner service or matching set of glasses is worth more to a shop than odd pieces, though single interesting pieces do still sell.
• Kitchenware like pans, cutlery and utensils, clean and without heavy rust or damage.
• Seasonal and decorative items tend to sell fastest around the relevant time of year — worth timing a donation if you can.

A few items with their own rules

Too damaged to donate?

Broken glass and ceramics generally can't go in standard household recycling — check your council's guidance, as many require these to go in general waste or a specific glass collection point rather than the usual recycling bin.
